The Disinformation Agent

Richard Doty served as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) and has admitted to conducting disinformation operations targeting UFO researchers. Most infamously, he is believed to have fed false documents and misleading information to researcher Paul Bennewitz, a campaign that contributed to Bennewitz's mental breakdown.

Doty has also claimed, in various interviews, to have been involved in genuine programmes involving recovered craft and non-human intelligence — claims that are impossible to verify and may themselves be disinformation. His dual role as both a source of misinformation and a claimant of insider knowledge makes him one of the most controversial figures in UFO history.

Doty's involvement in the field is a cautionary reminder that deliberate disinformation has been part of the government's UAP management strategy. His contradictory accounts — simultaneously admitting to deception while making extraordinary insider claims — illustrate the fundamental difficulty of establishing truth in a domain where government actors have deliberately muddied the waters.
